The BCG Matrix is a framework that helps to assess the value of investments in the company’s portfolio management. It was created in 1968 by Boston Consulting Group founder, Bruce Henderson.

This BCG Matrix Excel Template has been constructed by four quadrants which are Stars, Question Marks, Cash Cow and Poor Dog and each of them represents the different analysis of market growth rate and relative market share.

It helps to company to understand which product the company should invest in, and which ones should be divested.

BCG Matrix Template Features:

List down all the products that you wanted to show on the matrix. If you enter brands market share and the largest competitor’s market share then the Relative Market Share column will be calculated automatically.

Once you finished the input the data in these 6 columns, it will be automatically displayed in Numerical Visualization and original BCG matrix. You can comment about what should Brand do as the next step, according to product position by helping with the explanations of the BCG Matrix.

Cash Cows: Companies should milk these “cash cows” to induce growth and to maintain their market share. The market growth rate is low, the relative market share is high.

Stars: Companies should significantly invest in these “stars” as they have high future potential to become a cash cow. The market growth rate is high, the relative market share is high.

Question Marks: Companies should invest in “question marks” depending on their chances of becoming stars on the other side discard or sell if it does not have any chance. The market growth rate is high, the relative market share is low.

Poor Dogs: Companies should liquidate, divest, or retrench these “poor dogs”. The market growth rate is low, the relative market share is low.

That is an excellent solution based on Excel. It is nearly as good as the online tool fancy bcg matrix, which I slightly prefer since it is a bit cheaper and somewhat I have an Excel phobia :-).

  2. Charlie

I have download the template and have been using it for a while. I was searching this bcg matrix for my project. But, most of them just show the matrix for making a comment about the position of the brand, I mean only the graph on the right. But, this tool also provides me a numerical table to play with numbers to see the results. I purchased to modifiable to enlarge the scale of the graphs. It is useful and visually satisfying. Thanks guys!

As a former BCG employee, I find it does not capture the richness of the BCG framework. E.g.: the horizontal scale is linear (i.e. an RMS of 0.5 is distant from 1 as 1.5 from 2) while it should be a log, comparing directly the ratios. Guess bubbles have the same distortion…

  5. Bit Kang

Everything is really good. Thanks, guys.
But There have problem if the Market growth are over 10% they not showed in the BCG matrix chart
How can I make it show on it?

    • Someka

      Hi Bit,
Thanks a lot for your time to spent writing a comment on our templates.

While we are creating the BCG Matrix template, we tried to create an optimized chart. Otherwise, there is not a limit to enlarging the chart to being enough to show.
With the modifiable version of the template, you can rearrange the limit of both horizontal and vertical axis. In that way, you will be able to show larger Market Growths on the matrix.
